2024 Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) Challenge Exam

Period for first attempt exam:
‒ June, August, November 2024, or February 2025
‒ Once your application is approved, please note you have 180 days to register, schedule, and sit for the exam.
(E.g. If your application is approved in April 2024, you will need to sit the exam no later than August 2024 as your application will be expired in November 2024.)

The Institute, in partnership with The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), is pleased to offer the 2024 CIA Challenge Exam to its members. The exam is a fast track route for Institute members to attain the globally-recognized Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation.
The IIA is the acknowledged worldwide leader of the internal audit profession and serves as the global voice, recognized authority, chief advocate, and principal educator, with more than 200,000 members around the world.
This accelerated version of the CIA exam is an excellent opportunity to show your achievement and expertise in the internal audit field and increase your opportunities for professional growth and upward mobility.
Eligibility
Only current HKICPA members are eligible for this exam. Qualification Programme students, International Affiliate (IA), and former members are not eligible.
Exam Format
- 3-hour exam
- 150 multiple choice questions
- Offered in English only
Exam Package
The 2024 CIA Challenge Exam package fee:
- US$1,255 for HKICPA members who are IIA members
- US$1,625 for HKICPA members who are non-members of IIA

The package fee covers:
- CIA Challenge Exam application fee;
- CIA Challenge Exam registration fee;
- CIA Challenge Exam Study Guide for Qualified CAs/CPAs including 1,000 practice questions;
- Access to the online materials are valid for 12 months from date of invitation. Extensions are available for a fee; and
- Access to the Standards to help you prepare for the exam.
Exam Retake
Candidates of 2024 CIA Challenge Exam who are unsuccessful in passing their examination can retake the exam with unlimited number of times within 3 years. The retake exams will be available in August 2024, November 2024 and February 2025. The price for the retake exam is US$845 for IIA members and US$995 for non-IIA members.
Application steps
Before going through the application, you are recommended to get the below items ready and ensure they are acceptable by The IIA. Once the application of CIA challenge exam has been submitted via the online platform, NO REFUNDS, in part or whole, will be offered.
- Create a profile or log in to the Certification Candidate Management System (CCMS). You can click here for a basic guide.
- Select "Apply for Certified Internal Auditor."
- Select "CIA Challenge Program for Qualified Chartered Accountants and Certified Public Accountants."
- After the payment screen, you must upload a letter of good standing issued by HKICPA* and a government-issued ID. You must also complete the electronic character reference#. Once approved into the program, you may register and schedule your examination.
- To register and schedule your exam, select "Manage my program > CIA > Register."
* Letter of good standing: Please send a written request to the Institute's Membership and Admission Department (member@hkicpa.org.hk) providing the following information:
- Name and membership number of the applicant
- Purpose of the certification, i.e. "For applying 2024 CIA Challenge Exam"
- Signature of the applicant (scanned copy is acceptable)
- Recipient and address that the letter should be sent to
- Payment of the handling fee of HK$200 (non-refundable) per letter. Please refer to payment method for details.
Please allow two weeks processing time after all information and handling fee are received.
# Electronic character reference: Please fill in his/her full name, title, email address, preferred language, and the company. The IIA will email your character reference request to the person you submitted. You can invite the following persons to be your character reference:
‒ An individual holding and active IIA designation
‒ Your current supervisor
‒ A professor (for students only)

Online test
The IIA is offering online testing for candidates to take CIA Challenge Exam from home. You may get more details from this webpage.
It is important to take note that if you choose to take examinations with online testing, you must ensure technology and equipment compatibility as you are responsible for your own equipment and any disruption in your internet connectivity.
Taking exam at testing center
Candidates can take the exam at the IIA authorized testing centers. Currently there are 5 testing centers in Hong Kong and you may visit www.pearsonvue.com/iia then click "find a test center" to get the list.
